The 9/11 Memorial Museum is located at Ground Zero and is built into the original foundations of the Twin Towers. The museum documents the events of September 11, 2001 using artefacts from the towers and rescue services, as well as personal testimony, both written and recorded.

The Statue of Liberty is one of the most famous American icons. A gift from France, it was meant to symbolise the political freedom and democracy which had be won during the Civil War. You take the ferry to Liberty Island where you can visit the statue pedestal and explore the Museum. You then continue to Ellis Island where the Immigration Museum records the important role this island had in the processing most of the immigrants to the USA during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The skyline view of New York from Brooklyn Bridge Park is unforgettable, and after taking photos you can walk the pedestrian walkway across the bridge and back into Lower Manhattan. This is a boardwalk which runs above the traffic and so there is no traffic to worry about. Spend your time on this and savour the views which are probably at their best as evening approaches and the sun begins to set.

The Capitol Building is the home of both houses of Congress, the Senate and the House of Representatives. Construction began on the Capitol Building as early as 1792 and it was damaged by the British in the 1812 war. The iconic Dome was built during the Civil War from 1861-1865, and early pictures of victorious Union troops show them marching towards the building along Pennsylvania Avenue. Although the tour does not visit the actually chambers, it provides a fascinating insight into the history of the US Government.

Adjoining the Capitol Building by a tunnel you can also visit the Library of Congress. This is one of the hidden treasures of Washington and so much more than a library. The architecture in the building is stunning and perhaps the most beautiful interior in all of Washington DC. You can see Jefferson’s Library and there are often interesting temporary exhibitions situated here.

The Lincoln Memorial is the monumental memorial and statue of Abraham Lincoln which is located at the western end of the National Mall. Built in the form of a classical Greek style temple with Doric columns, it took eight years to build and was dedicated by President Warren Harding in 1922. Traditionally the memorial has been the scene of political demonstrations since the Civil Rights Movement and Vietnam War Protests of the 1960’s.

Housed in the iconic Frank Lloyd-Wright building, the museum grew out of the art-collecting of its patron and founder Solomon Guggenheim who was heir to a vast mining fortune. The vast atrium and ramp allow each of the six floors to flow into each other. The museum houses a collection of Kandinsky as well as works by surrealists and cubists such as Picasso, Paul Klee and Joan Miro. There are also exhibitions of many contemporary artists and photographers such as Robert Mablethorpe.
